omkara at penjor
balinese omkara symbol at the top of penjor on ubud, bali. known as om or aum, omkara is the root of all sounds, emitted as a mantra during meditation. it is believed all desires will vanish thus attaining self-realization and the highest of knowledge. this one letter symbolizes the most highest in the hindu pantheon, representing every kind of trinity such as brahma-vishnu-shiva; past-present-future; birth-life-death; creation-preservation-destruction; and waking-dreaming-deep sleep. a penjor is basically a long tapered bamboo pole that is stood vertically in the ground, often on the roadside, and decorated in coconut leaves. balinese hindus erect a penjor in front of their houses to symbolise the dominance of good (dharma) over evil (adharma), as well as offering thanks to God for the fruits of the earth. due to their innate beauty, these days penjors not only serve a religious function. they also feature at weddings, art performances, hotels, and at any occasion where there are guests of honour.Categories & Tags
